My Pictorial Diary

A picture tells a thousand words, so I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Take nothing but pictures,
Capture nothing but memories,
Leave nothing but footprints.

Woodlands Hospital Part 3 — Little Discoveries, Big Heart!

Missed our earlier hospital discoveries? Catch up with Part 2 below!

Woodlands Hospital Part 2 — From Runaway Butterflies to Little Picassos!

Cascading Falls — A Little Piece of Tranquillity

Aunty: “Wah! So many steps! Luckily, these are for the water!”

Waterfall: “Come, Aunty! Listen to my music!”

Aunty: “Ahhh, this one I prefer. No need to climb, just stand here and admire!”

The Cascading Falls at Woodlands Hospital caught my attention with their beautiful blue mosaic tiles and water flowing gently down the steps. Surrounded by greenery, this little corner offered a welcome moment of calm amid the bustle of the hospital.

The Bag Gallery — Take One, Give One!

Aunty: “Wah! Who organised this handbag exhibition?”

Bags: “Exhibition? Aunty, we're here to be reused!”

Aunty: “Aiyoh! But hanging together like this, you all look like an art installation!”

This cheerful corner encourages visitors to donate clean reusable bags or take one when needed. With bags of different colours and designs hanging against a playful mural, even a simple recycling initiative becomes an eye-catching display. Practical, thoughtful and rather artistic too!

A Stairway to Somewhere Familiar!

Aunty: “Hello, staircase! Where are you taking me?”

Staircase: “Up to the beautiful Therapeutic Gardens!”

Aunty: “Aiyoh, I've already visited them! We have our own story together!”

These broad steps lead towards the Therapeutic Gardens, surrounded by lovely greenery. I've explored those gardens before and shared that adventure in another blog post, so today I'll leave the stairs to tell their own little story.

A Giant Butterfly Spreading Its Wings!

Aunty: “Wah! What a huge butterfly! How come you're not flying?”

Pavilion: “I'm busy providing shelter, Aunty!”

Aunty: “Aiyoh! From flying around to working as a roof? What a career change!”

Inspired by butterfly wings, this colourful pavilion doubles as a sheltered gathering space and performance stage. I especially liked its sweeping curves and cheerful panels, which made it look like a giant butterfly had landed right in the hospital grounds.

A Short Ramp, A Long Journey!

Aunty: “Aiyoh, so short only! Easy lah!”

Legs: “Easy? You come down here and try walking with us!”

Aunty: “Okay, okay! Feels like crossing Nicholl Highway Bridge!”

This ramp is used for physiotherapy. Don't underestimate its short distance. For someone with leg difficulties, completing it can be a real challenge. I've been through physiotherapy myself, so I know how much effort even a few steps can take.

Sometimes the biggest achievement isn't how far we walk, but that we manage to walk at all.

Even the Bicycles Have a Happy Home!

Aunty: “Wah! You all got such a colourful parking lot!”

Bicycle: “Of course lah! We also deserve a nice place to rest!”

Aunty: “Not bad hor! Park here also got scenery to admire!”

A bright yellow cycling mural transforms this ordinary bicycle parking area into a cheerful little corner. Another thoughtful touch that makes Woodlands Hospital such an interesting place to explore.

Up and Down Without the Huffing and Puffing!

Aunty: “Wah! More stairs?”

Escalator: “Don't worry, Aunty! Just step on and I'll do the climbing!”

Aunty: “Good! My legs can finally enjoy a little holiday!”

One thing I really appreciated about Woodlands Hospital was how easy it felt to move between different levels. With lifts and escalators conveniently located around the hospital, getting about was much more comfortable for someone like me who has to be careful with her legs.

Nobody wants to finish a hospital visit feeling as though they've climbed Bukit Timah Hill!

Benches with a Splash of Colour!

Aunty: “Hello! Are you benches or giant building blocks?”

Bench: “Aunty, we're Heliconia Benches, okay!”

Aunty: “Oho! Even got a flower name! Very atas hor!”

These colourful benches are part of the Play Petals project, developed through a collaboration with NUS School of Design and Environment. Inspired by the hospital's Heliconia logo, they bring a playful touch to the walkway while offering visitors somewhere to rest.

Even the Roof Has Something to Show!

Aunty: “Wah! Even your roof got patterns!”

Roof: “Of course, Aunty! Why should the walls have all the fun?”

Aunty: “Aiyoh! Everywhere I turn, there's something to photograph!”

Looking upwards, I noticed the interesting geometric framework and leafy patterns decorating the glass canopy. Another thoughtful little detail that made the hospital surroundings more pleasant to explore.

Aunty Becomes a Giant!

Aunty!!! You haven't flown a drone, have you? How come suddenly got bird's-eye view of the entire hospital?!

Aiyoh, this is the architectural scale model of Woodlands Hospital, displayed behind glass! Look at all those buildings, rooftop greenery and landscaped spaces.

Aunty: “Eh? How come suddenly I'm taller than the hospital?”

Hospital: “Aunty, you're looking at my miniature version lah!”

Aunty: “OHHH! No wonder I can see everything without climbing stairs!”

A Flower Gallery That Sells Flowers!

Aunty: “Wah! What a lovely flower exhibition!”

Vending Machine: “Thank you, Aunty! Would you like to buy something?”

Aunty: “Aiyoh! I thought admission was free!”

Rows of beautifully arranged bouquets and gift baskets filled the illuminated compartments of this flower vending machine. With all those soft colours and pretty arrangements, it looked more like a miniature art gallery than an ordinary vending machine!

Medicine Collection at Your Convenience!

Aunty: “Wah! Nowadays even medicine has its own locker!”

Medicine: “Order me online, then come and collect me when I'm ready!”

Aunty: “Very good! No need to rush here and there!”

These MedCollect lockers allow patients to collect their pre-ordered medication at their convenience. A thoughtful idea, especially for those who may find travelling or waiting difficult. And the colourful floral artwork makes the lockers rather cheerful too!

The Silent Companion

Aunty: “You've seen so many people come and go, haven't you?”

Bench: “Some sat here with happy hearts, others with heavy ones.”

Aunty: “And you quietly kept them company through it all.”

Just an ordinary wooden bench in a hospital. Yet imagine the stories it could tell — the relief of hearing good news, the sadness of receiving bad news, and the long, anxious waits in between.

I've been here as a patient myself, and as a daughter worrying about Mama. I know how precious a little good news can be.

Sometimes, all we need is somewhere to sit, gather our thoughts and find the strength to carry on.

Another Group of Unsung Heroes

Aunty: “Hello, everyone! Waiting for your next assignment?”

Wheelchairs: “Yes, Aunty. Whenever someone needs us, we're ready.”

Aunty: “No applause, no complaints. Just quietly helping others along.”

These wheelchairs may look ordinary, but to someone who struggles to walk, they can mean comfort, relief and a little independence.

Some carry patients to their appointments, others help tired visitors get around. They quietly play their part in making a difficult day a little easier.

Not every hero wears a cape. Some have four wheels.

From Chopsticks to Benches — Surprise!

Aunty: “WAIT! You mean you were once chopsticks?”

Bench: “Yes lah! Yesterday helping people eat, today helping people rest!”

Aunty: “Wah! From dining table to hospital corridor. What a career change!”

A closer look revealed that these beautiful benches were made from recycled chopsticks by a local microfactory. Together, the two benches used 10,920 chopsticks, with a reported emissions saving of 483 kg CO₂e.

Who would have guessed that something so easily discarded could be given such a useful second life?

Little Details, Big Appreciation

I wonder how many people have sat on these benches without knowing their story.

Throughout my walk around Woodlands Hospital, I kept discovering little surprises — artwork, thoughtful designs and even ordinary furniture with extraordinary stories.

So much effort and care have gone into making this hospital a more welcoming place. I hope more visitors will slow down occasionally and appreciate these little details.

Sometimes, the smallest things deserve a second look.

A Hospital with a Heart

The more I explored Woodlands Hospital, the more I appreciated the thought that had gone into its design.

Gone were the gloomy, seemingly endless corridors I remembered from hospitals of the past. Here, the surroundings felt bright and welcoming, with clear signs, good lighting, greenery, artwork and plenty of seating areas.

Even that familiar hospital disinfectant smell wasn't noticeable to me.

Hospitals are places where people come with worries, pain and uncertainty. A pleasant environment may not take those worries away, but it can certainly make the waiting a little easier.

And on that particular morning, while waiting for news of CEO Mama, I was grateful for these little distractions.

A Splash of Calm to End My Walk

Aunty: “Wah! After all those surprises, something to soothe my eyes!”

Colours: “No need to rush, Aunty. Just enjoy the view.”

Aunty: “Okay lah, but first let me take two more photos!”

I loved these beautiful layers of blue, turquoise and soft earthy tones. No complicated explanation needed — sometimes colours alone are enough to make us stop and admire.

And with that, my little exploration of Woodlands Hospital came to an end. What began as an anxious morning turned into an unexpected journey of discovery, reminding me that even in difficult moments, there can be little pockets of beauty waiting to be found.
