Missed our first round of hospital discoveries? Catch up with Part 1 below!
Woodlands Hospital Part 1 — From Kopi Gao Gao to Colourful Surprises!
A Colourful Little Parade
Aunty: “Wah! Who dressed all of you up so nicely?”
Balusters: “We're all dressed up to welcome you, Aunty!”
Aunty: “Aiyoh, every one of you wearing a different outfit!”
Near the food court, I came across these brightly painted balusters displayed in front of a large neighbourhood mural. Each had its own colourful patterns, turning an ordinary railing into a cheerful little work of art.
Eight Butterflies Playing Hide-and-Seek!
Aunty: “Hello, butterflies! The sign says there are eight of you. Where are you hiding?”
Butterflies: “Find us if you can, Aunty!”
Aunty: “Aiyoh! I see leaves, I see flowers… but where are YOU?”
Maybe the butterflies were watching me search and giggling behind the leaves!
Butterfly 1: “Shhh! Don't move! She's looking this way!”
Butterfly 2: “Don't worry lah, she's busy taking photos!”
Along this 85-metre corridor, beautiful botanical illustrations covered the walls, with eight butterflies cleverly hidden among them. I looked and looked, but couldn't spot them. Never mind lah, the artwork itself was already lovely enough to admire!
Never Too Old to Learn!
Aunty: “Learning Space? Aiyoh, I thought I left school decades ago!”
Signboard: “Learning doesn't stop when you leave school, Aunty!”
Aunty: “Okay lah! But no homework and examinations, hor!”
Another interesting corner of Woodlands Health Campus! The Learning Space sits among greenery, reflecting the hospital's effort to create a welcoming environment where nature, learning and well-being come together.
Rain Garden — Even the Plants Have a Job!
Aunty: “Hello, greenery! Just relaxing here all day?”
Plants: “Relaxing? We're busy helping to clean rainwater!”
Aunty: “Wah! Even you all have duties. Aunty better not disturb!”
These Rain Gardens collect and naturally filter rainwater through plants and soil before the water is stored for landscape irrigation. According to the information board, the two gardens can harvest the equivalent of about six Olympic-sized swimming pools of rainwater annually. Even the rocks were reused from the campus construction!
Old Rocks, New Jobs!
Aunty: “Hello, rocks! What are you all doing here?”
Rocks: “We were dug up during construction, Aunty!”
Aunty: “Wah! Instead of retiring, you all got new jobs!”
These granite rocks were salvaged during the construction of Woodlands Health Campus and reused in its landscaping. Rather than becoming construction waste, they now have a new purpose in the Rain Garden. Even rocks deserve a second chance!
A Roof with a View!
Aunty: “Hello, trees! You're growing so tall!”
Trees: “We're just reaching for a little more sunshine!”
Aunty: “Aiyoh! Even my neck has to work overtime to admire you!”
Looking upwards, I found tall trees reaching towards the open sky, with a glass canopy offering another view of the greenery above. I loved how nature and architecture seemed to share the same space so comfortably.
Take the Stairs? Okay, Take Photos!
Signboard: “Take the stairs! Good for your health!”
Aunty: “Okay, okay! I'll take them!”
Stairs: “Then come on, start climbing!”
Aunty: “Who said anything about climbing? I meant taking PHOTOS!”
Woodlands Health encourages visitors to use its four colourful Active Living Staircases instead of the lifts. The staircases even have information about calories burned while climbing. As for Aunty, photographing all those colourful steps was exercise enough for the eyes!
Shopping Temptations at the Hospital!
Aunty: “Eh? Hospital also got bazaar?”
Bazaar: “Come, Aunty! Shopping, food and plenty more!”
Aunty: “Aiyoh! I came to look after Mama, not to empty my wallet!”
Another surprise at Woodlands Hospital — a poster advertising the T.Cartel Bazaar, with stalls offering everything from crafts and gifts to food and drinks. Who would have expected a little shopping opportunity during a hospital visit?
Good Morning, Mr Robot!
Aunty: “Good morning! 8 am and already working, ah?”
Robot: “Of course! Busy, busy! Please don't block my way!”
Aunty: “Okay lah, I siam! Later you cry, I don't know how to comfort you!”
Imagine the robot's eyes changing from 00 to TT — crying already! Hahaha....
This little robot was already going about its duties early in the morning. With those cute digital eyes and glowing blue lights, how could I resist taking a photo? But better keep my distance and let it carry on working peacefully!
Little Artists, Big Imaginations!
Aunty: “Wah! So many colourful faces!”
Paintings: “Come closer, Aunty! Every face has a story!”
Aunty: “Aiyoh, where shall I start looking?”
At the Arts for Healing display, I discovered self-portraits by Primary 6 students from Greenwood Primary School. Inspired by Picasso, the young artists used bold colours, unusual shapes and their own imaginations to express themselves.
A Face Full of Surprises
Aunty: “Hello! How many faces are hiding in there?”
Painting: “Look carefully, Aunty. There's more than meets the eye!”
Yin Zhekai's colourful portrait kept my eyes busy, following the shapes and lines in every direction.
A Little Off-Cetre, A Lot of Character!
Aunty: “Eh, your eyes don't quite match!”
Painting: “Who says they must, Aunty?”
Odelia Ng's portrait had its own playful personality, with an interesting mix of angles and colours.
Hearts, Stars and a Colourful Face
Aunty: “Wah! Hearts, stars and so many colours!”
Painting: “That's what makes me special!”
Venice Teo's artwork was bursting with cheerful details. I especially liked those little hearts and stars tucked into the design.
More Little Masterpieces Await!
What a lovely surprise to discover so much creativity within a hospital! But Aunty hadn't finished admiring the young artists' work yet.
More colourful discoveries await in Part 3. Come along!
